Heanor is a small hill-top market town in the southern, rolling foot-hills of the Pennine range of Mountains. Heanor lies between the cities of Derby and Nottingham in the region of England called the East-midlands.

Heanor is set on a hill rising out of the gentle valley formed by the Erewash River which feeds into the river Trent.

The centre of the town is a market square. Market day is on Fridays and Saturdays. The market has been in decline for quite some time and the Saturday market much smaller and closes earlier. The market square is overlooked by a 12th century church. Heanor is administered by Amber Valley Borough Council

The town had been involved in the coal mining industry for generations. (This region is where the industrial revolution began and textile industry was also an important to this area.) The mining industrial collapsed in the 1980's and the textile industry collapsed in the 1990's which caused a blow to the local economy.

Despite this the town has grown over the last 20 years and has now fused with small communities of Langley Mill, Marpool, Codnor, Loscoe and Aldercar around the sides of Heanor Hill.

The nearby town of Eastwood (3km away) is where DH Lawrence was born and so this area is often described in his novels.
