Here's my collection of smilies. If you've not seen them before, they are used in e-mail English. This form of English is usually informal (eg typos, bad spelling, stream of consciousness rambling, etc). It's much like spoken English and the smilies are used to add the sort of queues that body language, facial expressions and voice intonation would normally give.
