OK, not books, not paper, but the words that make up the books can be got from the internet for free. Best of all - the words are in the right order!
Due to the magnanimous efforts of thousands of kind folks scanning, typing and proofreading up these books, they are now available for you to download for FREE!
More recently large companies have 'industrialised' this effort bringing millions of documents to the web.
They're called e-texts, e-documents or e-books and can be computer searched, archived, and searched much more easily than paper.
- The Open Library is a project to produce web page for every one of over 23 million books. Over a million of the pages include the full text of the book.
- Project Gutenberg has over 30,000 eBooks and eDocuments scanned and proofread by volunteers
- Google Books allows you to search over 7 million scanned books like you search web pages. Most of the older books can be downloaded.
- Downloadable texts from 'The Internet Archive' with well over a million texts.
- World Public Library with over 750,000 eTexts
- University of Pennsylvania's listing of over 35,000 free e-books
